Wood fences are a popular choice for homeowners seeking privacy, security, and aesthetic appeal. They come in various styles, each offering unique benefits and serving different purposes. For instance, privacy fences are commonly used in backyards to create a secluded space, away from the prying eyes of neighbors or passersby. These fences can also serve as a sound barrier, reducing noise from nearby roads or establishments. On the other hand, agricultural fences, often seen in rural areas, are simpler in design, consisting mainly of posts and horizontal boards, and are used to contain livestock or mark property boundaries.
When considering the installation of a wood fence, it's essential to be mindful of local building codes and regulations, which may dictate specific requirements such as the depth of post holes or the height of the fence. It's also crucial to contact local utility companies before digging to avoid damaging underground service lines. The spacing of fence posts, typically about eight feet apart, and the depth of post holes, which should extend below the frost line to prevent heaving, are key considerations during installation. The use of gravel at the base of post holes can enhance stability and drainage.
The choice of wood is another important consideration. Pressure-treated pine is a common and cost-effective option, treated to resist the elements, making it suitable for various climates. Cedar is another popular choice, known for its natural oils that repel moisture and pests, though it requires protection from direct soil contact to prevent rot. Redwood, while more expensive, offers superior durability and natural resistance to weathering, making it a long-lasting option for fences.
For those looking to add a gate to their wood fence, the construction and installation require careful planning to ensure stability and alignment. Gates can be framed with wood or reinforced with metal to prevent sagging over time. The finish and maintenance of the fence are also crucial for longevity. Applying a wood preservative, especially around the base of fence posts, and regular staining or painting can protect the wood from rot and UV damage, extending the life of the fence.
Wood fences offer versatility in design and functionality, making them an excellent choice for enhancing the privacy, security, and aesthetic appeal of a property. Proper planning, adherence to local regulations, and regular maintenance are key to ensuring the longevity and effectiveness of a wood fence.

Cedar Fence Types
After you decide on your fence material, now its time to decide on the style. Cedar fence comes in a few different styles that are "off the shelf", but we can also custom build any fence you like. Below we discuss the most popular options for those choosing cedar fence materials for their next fence installation.
Cedar Picket Fence
Cedar picket fences are comprised of a few different components. First is the picket style. The picket style refers to the cut at the top. Traditional style is dogear. Dog ear pickets have a cut on each side with a flat top. Less common are pointed pickets like the one pictured above. The pointed picket fence gives it a more elegant appearance. For all of our fences we typically use western red cedar, which is the most common variety of cedar available today.
There is also the gothic picket style. Gothic refers to the inverted cuts on the sides and bottle top design as pictured below. Gothic style can come in slightly different variations, so if you desire an exact style please be sure to share some photos with us prior to your fence build.
Picket fences are usually in 4' and 5' varieties. 6' picket fences are uncommon, but we can custom build anything you'd like. We have also built 3' picket fences to meet the demands of some our clients in certain residential suburbs.
Cedar Privacy Fencing
Cedar privacy fencing is the most common fence installation of them all. It offers a natural look and full privacy for your backyard. The privacy refers to the board placement, with being each board nailed right next to one another.
For all fences, whether picket or privacy, there will be rails, or 2x4s placed on the top and the bottom on the interior side of the fence. This is the frame of the fence and provides stability for each panel between the posts.
With any cedar fence installation you have the following components:
- Pickets
- Posts
- Rails
Wood Post Caps
There are a variety of post cap styles available for cedar fences. However, we use one particular style. The cap pictured here is a decorative cap that is additional cost (typically $10-15/per cap). Alternatively, a basic cap as pictured on the fence below is what is included with a standard cedar fence.
Please note caps can only be placed on non-decorative posts.

We can customize the tops of the posts to your exact specification. No extra charge!
