What are the most common styles for fences?

Fence Types

After you decide on your fence material, now its time to decide on the style. Picket fence comes in a few different styles that are "off the shelf", but we can also custom build any fence you like. Below we discuss the most popular options for those choosing cedar fence materials for their next fence installation.

Cedar Picket Fence

Cedar picket fences are comprised of a few different components. First is the picket style. The picket style refers to the cut at the top. Traditional style is dogear. Dog ear pickets have a cut on each side with a flat top. Less common are pointed pickets like the one pictured above. The pointed picket fence gives it a more elegant appearance. For all of our fences we typically use western red cedar, which is the most common variety of cedar available today.


There is also the gothic picket style. Gothic refers to the inverted cuts on the sides and bottle top design as pictured below. Gothic style can come in slightly different variations, so if you desire an exact style please be sure to share some photos with us prior to your fence build.


Picket fences are usually in 4' and 5' varieties. 6' picket fences are uncommon, but we can custom build anything you'd like. We have also built 3' picket fences to meet the demands of some our clients in certain residential suburbs.

Pressure Treated Pine Picket Fencing

Pressure treated pine picket fencing we can install the same exact way with just 1 exception; the pickets themselves can't be as thin. So if you are looking for a super thin picket size, cedar would be the better option. The reason being is that pine can warp if its cut at too thin of a size, where cedar maintains its shape overall for the life of the fence.


For all fences, whether picket or privacy, there will be rails, or 2x4s placed on the top and the bottom on the interior side of the fence. This is the frame of the fence and provides stability for each panel between the posts.


With any cedar fence installation you have the following components:

  • Rails


Please be advised that pressure treated pine fences do not come standard with post caps as styles are very limited. However, we can add basic post caps to any fence for a small additional fee.

Cedar Post Caps

There are a variety of post cap styles available for cedar fences. However, we use one particular style. The cap pictured here is a decorative cap that is additional cost (typically $10-15/per cap). Alternatively, a basic cap as pictured on the fence below is what is included with a standard cedar fence.


Please note caps can only be placed on non-decorative posts.

Picket Fence Installation

Fence Picket & Post Cuts


There are a few various designs to choose from for picket fencing. There are different cuts for posts and pickets, as well as there being different widths for posts and pickets.


For pickets you usually have the choice of 4" pickets or 6" wide pickets.


For posts you usually are going with 4x4 but 5x5 is also available for wood fences.


Then for the cuts on the pickets and posts, we have a variety of choices which can be found on the cedar fence and fence styles page for your choosing. We can match a variety of styles, ask a representative if you don't see what you are looking for!

Wood Picket Fence Styles

We offer a variety of picket fence styles for wood fences. The great thing about working with wood is we can custom make anything that your heart desires. The most common wood picket fence styles are:


  • Arch Top
  • Scalloped
  • Spaced Picket
  • Standard Picket
  • Semi-Privacy (smaller spacing w/framing)
  • Stockade
  • Gothic Picket
  • Pointed Picket
  • Dog Ear Picket


While it may be confusing, "picket fencing" is not to be confused with "privacy fencing" even though they both use fence pickets. Picket fence has a space between the pickets themselves, while privacy has no space between pickets. Privacy fence can be boards up against each other or overlapping such as for board on board and shadowbox.


Picket Fence Heights

Picket fences are usually 4' tall but can also be 3' tall for instance for front yards that have restrictions. We can also do 5' and 6' tall but these are less common.
